Fulbright U.S. Student Program - English Teaching Assistant Awards

Description

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the largest U.S. exchange program offering opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, creative work, and English language teaching worldwide. The English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Grants place Fulbrighters in classrooms abroad to provide assistance for local English teachers while also serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. Applicants for a Fulbright ETA grant can apply to only one country.

Award

Fulbright grant benefits include round-trip transportation to the host country; funding to cover room, board, and incidental costs based on the cost of living in the host country; accident and sickness health benefits; and 24/7 support line for urgent and non-urgent situations. In some countries, grants may also include: book & research allowances; mid-term enrichment activities; full or partial tuition; language study programs; and pre-departure and in-country orientations. 

Eligibility

• U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals
• Applicants must have a conferred bachelor's degree or equivalent before the start of the grant. In the creative and performing arts, four years of professional training and/or experience meets the basic eligibility requirements.
• Applicants must be in good health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Medical Certificate from a physician.
• Applicants must have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country sufficient to communicate with the people and to carry out the proposed study/research. This is especially important for projects in the social sciences and the humanities.

Selection Criteria

• Program requirements in the chosen country (these do vary! you'll need to read closely the country profiles for the different countries you are considering and see if you are a match for what they are looking for
• Academic or professional record
• Relevant experience, such as classroom, teaching, tutoring, coaching, camp counseling, or sports leadership 
• Personal qualifications
• Language preparation (if program requires or recommends a certain level of language proficiency)
• Extent to which the candidate will help advance the Fulbright program's mission of promoting mutual understanding between the U.S. and the partner countries
